Is your school BGA Block Grant Application project ready? πŸ€”πŸ’ Maybe it’s time to look at your Site Masterplan? πŸ“

Hey again School Leader!

If capital works are on your schoolΚΌs horizon, I thought this might be useful.

I recently put together a short timeline of services for independent schools developing a Site Masterplan, particularly to assist on their ISV Grant Application journey.

But before the plans, the grants and the spatial entitlements, thereΚΌs a more important question:

What has your Site Masterplan process looked like?

Is it primarily about enrolments and spatial entitlements? Of course, these are important. But we think a good masterplan starts with a conversation β€” and a willingness to assume nothing and be curious about everything. πŸ”

That might mean asking:

  • Where is your school right now?

  • What drives learning and teaching on campus?

  • What role does your school play in the community β€” and what role does the community play in your school?

  • What is your mission for students? For your staff?

  • What could your learning environments look like?

  • Where would you like your school to be in 5 years time?

  • When do you need the works identified in the Masterplan to be operational?

  • What steps are necessary to get there?

  • And what are you willing to invest to make it happen?

A Site Masterplan is more than a plan for buildings.

For us, it is a statement of intent for the future β€” a strategic tool that allows an Independent School Leader to propose projects grounded in sound educational planning, considering learning outcomes, the environment, campus operations and, importantly, the cost, scale and use of the facilities being funded.

It can also put your school in a stronger position when preparing for a new project or an ISV Grant Application: clear on where you are going, why you are going there, and what needs to happen next. 🧭

At WHDA, we specialise in education and public works. I'm one of the Directors, and IΚΌve spent most of my career working across education and public projects.

But I'm still genuinely be curious to hear from youπŸ‘‚:

What has your Masterplan process looked like? What worked? What could have been better? And what questions would you ask next time?

Would love to hear from you soon.

Cheers,
